Advice for 2017, 6th year students on obtaining Leaving Cert results

Results will be available for collection from the school from 9am on Wednesday August 16th. Students can also access their results on from 12pm, noon, on the same day. To access results online you will need your examination number and an individual pin code which has been supplied to you earlier this year. If you cannot locate this code you may call the school and they will provide you with it.

A new grading scheme (see diagram below) has been introduced this year along with a new CAO points’ structure. The new grading system can also be accessed here. The major changes are that there is now only seven bands of 10 per cent each, from 100 to 30, for which you can get CAO points. Therefore, any student who gets over 30 per cent in any higher level subject will be eligible for CAO points.

On the morning of the results it is natural to be nervous and you may find it difficult to calculate what points you have achieved. In order to calculate your points accurately, you can use Qualifax, which provides an easy to use calculator.

Remember points are calculated on the best six subject results received in one sitting of the Leaving Cert. If you have received a H6 or over in your Higher Level Maths paper you may add on 25 points to your grade. The Qualifax points calculator will do this automatically for you.

Because this is the first year of the new point system, it will not be as easy as in previous years to predict what course you may be offered from the CAO system so you will need to be aware of these important dates:

1st Round CAO offers available online 6am, Mon, August 21st

Deadline for accepting Round 1 offers 5:15pm August 28th

2nd Round offers issued August 31st

More information is available online at CAO will continue to issue offers up to the end of October.

Please remember you may only be made one offer from the CAO so you should accept it, even if it is not your highest preference. You may still be offered a higher choice in Round 2 but there is no guarantees.

You may also be made two offers from Level 6/7 and Level. Think carefully about which course you are offered.

If deferring, DO NOT ACCEPT A COURSE OFFER. Instead, you need to write to or email the Admissions office of college/university concerned before the reply date of CAO offer notice giving name, CAO number, course code and reason for deferral. Correspondence must be clearly marked Deferred Entry. If your deferral is not granted you should accept your CAO offer.

Colleges of Further Education:

It is not too late to apply for Level 5 and Level 6 courses in the number of FETAC colleges in the Dublin area.

It may be that you are unsure about taking up a CAO offer, did not receive an offer or are interested in a course that does not require a University qualification. Below are a list of all the FETAC colleges in the Dublin area:

Ballsbridge College of Further Education
Ballyfermot College of Further Education
Kylemore College
Whitehall College of Further Education
St. Kevin's College

These colleges have been interviewing and offering course places since the beginning of the year but interviews do continue into September and in some cases places are offered right up to the start of the courses. As each college has their own application process, it is advised to visit their website for the latest updates in course vacancies.

Viewing exam scripts and making appeals:

If you would like to view exam scripts or think you may want to appeal a result, the closing date for receipt of completed application forms in schools is Tuesday, August 22nd. You will receive an application form with your Leaving Cert results.

Viewing of scripts will take place in school on Friday September 1st and Saturday 2nd. You must be present to view a script and you may bring a person with you. This may be a parent, or possibly a teacher, who has agreed to view your script with you. Teachers are not obliged to make themselves available, but most are happy to help although some will simply not be in a position to due to prior commitments.
